This commitment is reflected in our MALTiply 2030 strategy, and we are proud of the progress we are making. Over the next five years, we will continue to invest in scaling agronomy programmes, promoting regenerative agriculture, developing more efficient and lower-impact malthouses, strengthening our social initiatives, and contributing positively to the communities where we operate.”
Soufflet Malt’s second voluntary sustainability report demonstrates how the company is advancing its three sustainability pillars: Achieving Environmental Excellence, Promoting Responsible and Sustainable Agriculture and Advancing Social Responsibility with their stakeholders.
“We are pleased to have significantly advanced on our sustainability roadmap for the year, putting us on the path to reach our 2030 goals,” said Sophie Godier, Chief Sustainability Officer, Soufflet Malt. “Sustainability is woven into every facet of our business. For example, we have strengthened our health and safety systems so that safety is not just compliance, but a core belief. Across our value chain, our teams are at the forefront of transformation. We are guided by targets that reflect the rising expectations of our stakeholders which call for stronger environmental performance, greater transparency and more innovative solutions.”
Highlights from the 2025 sustainability report
1. Achieving Environmental Excellence
Soufflet Malt reports strong progress in reducing the environmental impact of its operations:
- -14% greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 & 2) vs the baseline year
- -7% water consumption vs baseline year
- 93% of waste recovered in the malthouses
These gains are driven by significant investments in:
- Expansion of solar energy and thermal‑solar projects in Romania and Bulgaria
- Advanced water recovery technologies at the Inverness (Scotland) malthouse
- Official signing for the construction of a new state-of-the-art malthouse in South Africa, designed to be the company’s most energy‑efficient facility to date
Soufflet Malt also continues to target Scope 3 emissions, primarily linked to barley cultivation, through sustainable supply chain strategies and regenerative farming solutions.
2. Promoting Responsible and Sustainable Agriculture:
Soufflet Malt’s strength lies in its longstanding agronomic expertise and deep relationships with farmers around the world. The company significantly expanded its sustainable agricultural footprint through major customer partnerships:
- 39% of barley purchased is certified as sustainable under the SAI Platform’s Farm Sustainability Assessment or equivalent standards
- Carlsberg Kronenbourg Brasseries: successful three-year programme scaling the 1664 brand’s sustainable malt from 20% (2022) to 100% (2025).
- Sapporo Breweries: launch of a beer brewed with Soufflet Malt’s low‑carbon, fully traceable ClimCare malt.
- Suntory (Czech Republic): a three-year regenerative agriculture pilot, trialing new practices on 400 hectares to generate science‑based insights on soil health, biodiversity and carbon reduction
Most recently, Soufflet Malt signed a multi-year partnership with Heineken to supply malt from regenerative agriculture practices in France. Behind these successes is the company’s robust agronomy model, which begins years ahead of production and focuses on trust-building, field expertise and local supply chain development.
3. Advancing Social Responsibility with all our Stakeholders
Soufflet Malt continues to reinforce internal and external stakeholder relationships, focused on:
- Safety culture transformation, with health and safety elevated from compliance to core corporate belief. 88% of our locations operated lost-time injury free during the period.
- 35% of sites delivered at least one community-focused initiative, reflecting Soufflet Malt’s commitment to supporting the development of the communities in which it operates
- Stronger culture and values, embedded through our MALT Stars culture, training and global leadership communication
- A new code of conduct sets clear expectations for ethical behavior and responsible business practices
These efforts are designed to ensure sustainable growth and value creation across all regions where the company operates.
